The period from the winter equinox to the middle of April is the time here we experience the harshest weather. Much of our garden’s beauty must rely on the bones of bare branches and evergreens draped with snow.

But if you scrape the snow aside, or better yet find a warm spot by the foundation of the house to plant, you can have precocious flowers in the dark of winter and through the fickle days of March and April!

Here’s a brief list of plants to look for in the winter/early spring. Check our catalog for descriptions.

• Arum italicum
• Cyclamen coum
• Erica carnea
• Hellebore
• Iris reticulata
• Sanguinaria canadensis
